Journal of Cell Biologyさん Both the cargo and the clathrin adaptor protein can affect the size and turnover of clathrin coated pits. Uneven and mobile clusters of AP2 are evident within enlarged clathrin-coated structures when Dab2 and its receptor CD8/LDLR are over-expressed, although distribution of Dab2 remains uniform.

Journal of Cell Biologyさん People and Ideas – Isabelle Vernos: Motoring around the mitotic spindle

Lots of different motors are involved in organizing the mitotic spindle. “I don’t think anyone thought there could be so many motors in Xenopus,” says Isabelle Vernos, who uses cutting-edge microscopy to track assembly of the mitotic spindle in Xen...opus eggs. Vernos characterized the kinesin-like motors Xkid and Xklp1, which create the “polar ejection force”, positioning chromosomes at the metaphase plate, among other jobs. To find out more about Vernos’ molecular-motor guided tour of spindle biology, see “People and Ideas”, part of the March 8, 2010 issue of the JCB.

Journal of Cell Biologyさん REVIEW: The Golgi and the centrosome: Building a functional partnership.

In interphase cells, the Golgi (red) nestles up next to the centrosome (green), but it distances itself from this microtubule organizing center during mitosis. In the March 8, 2010 issue of the JCB, Christine Sϋtterlin and Antonio Colanzi review w...hat we know about the link between organization of the Golgi and cell cycle progression.

Journal of Cell Biologyさん From the Archive: Ribosomes, or the particles of Palade

When George Palade noted a particulate component of the cytoplasm, he confirmed its presence using two different fixatives to avoid “the perennial and arduous question of artifact versus reality.”

Palade saw the structures were both on the ER and free in the cytop...lasm. But Palade realized that the “basophilic cytoplasm”, RNA-rich areas that stain with basic dyes, and “Nissl bodies” in neurons were one and the same. The correlation between rough ER and protein synthesis came later with correlative EM and biochemistry studies.

Journal of Cell Biologyさん Cilium formation: Lessons from the past

jcb-biowrites.rupress.org
I recently attended a Keystone Symposium on Cilia, Signaling and Human Disease … Several of the talks showed EM images from a JCB paper published in 1962. This made me curious about the article and I decided to investigate.

Journal of Cell Biologyさん In Focus – Centrosomes remember which way is up

Although Drosophila neuroblasts (stem cells found in larval brains) can divide more than 100 times, the orientation of the divisions remains constant. “The orientation of the stem cells doesn’t depend on the external environment,” says author Jens Januschke, “It’s generat...ed in a cell-autonomous manner.” To find out more about how microtubule-based memory helps orient dividing brain cells, see the paper and the accompanying “In Focus” article, which are both part of the March 8, 2010 issue of the JCB.

Journal of Cell Biologyさん New biosights: A microtubule-independent network of proteins called the spindle matrix is involved in assembling mitotic and meiotic spindles, but whether the matrix makes a mechanical contribution to spindle shape is unclear.
