Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection
September 30, 2009 - January 31, 2010
When the Iraqi press called her a serpent, Madeleine Albright showed up at her next meeting with Iraqi officials wearing a snake brooch. And so began her habit of using her brooches to make complex ...diplomatic statements, often with patriotism, sometimes with poetry, usually with an incisive sense of humor. Come see her famed collection of pins at MAD and find out which mean “We offer solidarity,” which mean "These negotiations are moving too slowly,” and which mean “Don’t mess with the US."

Slash: Paper Under the Knife
October 7, 2009 - April 4, 2010
Paper--it surrounds us at home and at work, the most ubiquitous of materials. The artists in Slash have taken the very common medium and transformed it by cutting, tearing, and burning, creating works (many site-specific and made just for this exhibition) with delicacy, complexity, and astounding innovation. This is an exhibition that will change completely the way you think about paper and its possibilities. Come see what you could have been doing at the office with all those supplies, instead of fooling around on Facebook.

Museum of Arts and Designさん 'Ghost Stories: New Designs from Nendo' is open! There was a nice write up in the Times about the exhibition, and we're working on a video overview with some installation shots. (In preparation for the exhibition, the Nendo team spent a week sticking about 7 million white dots to the floor of the 2nd floor gallery - it's a very, very cool effect.)

Tomorrow, "Ghost Stories," an installation of four of Nendo's newest creations, opens at New York's Museum of Arts and Design.

Museum of Arts and Designさん Public Program alert: Tonight, 'Slash' Artists will discuss their work and the state of contemporary work in paper in the theater at MAD (and it's free!). Next week is something truly fantastic: a screening of the first full-length animated film ever made, 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed' (IMDB - http://bit.ly/VAUjI)..., with live accompaniment on piano. Seriously - it's all cut paper, and it's awesome.

On Wednesday, October 14th, 2009, the Museum of Art and Design celebrates one year in their new home at 2 Columbus Circle with their first annual young patron’s gala, the MAD PAPERBALL. With a Host... Committee that reads like a who’s who of the downtown fashion, art and social scenes, MAD welcomes guests to attend a night filled with fine art, delicious food and cool music, all to support the Museum’s acclaimed education programs. This event also celebrates the opening of the new show, Slash: Paper Under Knife, an exhibition of works by 45 international artists, commissioned to create site-specific works made of cut, torn, burned and shredded paper.
The other goal of the PAPERBALL is to bring the new generation of artists into the fold and open the museum up to an audience that may not even know this amazing institution is at their fingertips. In keeping with this mission, there are affordable ticket prices for purchase that range from $150 to $350.
The event begins at 6 PM and includes a private dinner for top-level supporters in the Museum’s new restaurant, with staggered entries at the various ticket levels. At 8:30 PM, the dancing begins and will go until midnight. The PAPERBALL features music by DJs Paul Sevigny, Harley Viera-Newton & Cassie Coane, and Leo Fitzpatrick.
The MAD Projects Gallery will be transformed into a chic bar lounge and dance floor for celebrating until midnight while the Special Events Space on the 7th floor will feature a lounge hosted by the MAD Design Council of MAD early in the evening and it will then change into yet another playground for design and art and party.
In keeping with the Gala theme of paper, MAD has invited some of the most intriguing minds in fashion and design to create works in paper on the basis of how paper inspires them, as a medium and as a method, to realize their works of art. These extraordinary works range from paper dresses to fashion accessories and product design which will be on display throughout the Museum and available for purchase on site to benefit the Museum’s education programs.
Participating artists include: Matthew Williamson, Dror Benshetrit, Issey Miyake, Kai Kühne, Ruffian, Yeohlee Teng, Rogan Gregory, Kenzo Minami, Surface to Air, Frank Tell, Zaldy, Gemma Kahng, Brian Kenny, Bliss Lau, Maria Pinto, Slava Mogutin, Jen Kao, Lela Rose, Gilded Age, Rubin Chapelle, Donald Deal, Craig McDean, Ryder Robison, Jeffrey Monteiro, Henrik Vibskov, Steven & William Ladd, Nina Basharova, Larisa Barrera, Beth Sosin, Amanda Eufer, Corinne Grassini, Susan Woo, Anna Chen, Pam Levine, Playground, Gina Pankowski, Susan Suh, Ben Aranda, Marcus Tremonto, Peter Macapia, StephanieGoto, Auguste Garufi, Chris Gilmour, Tasja Keetman, Alexandra Weems, Trove, and more.
The PAPERBALL Lead Sponsor is Kate’s Paperie, with additional sponsorship provided by Hugo Boss and Oldcastle Glass. In addition, the exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife is made possible by Kate’s Paperie with additional generous support provided by the Angelica Berrie Foundation.
