Nashville Ballet Nashville Ballet presents the encore season of the acclaimed Nashville-based Nutcracker December 11-20, 2009. If you were one of the few people who missed last year’s premiere, be sure to attend this year’s production. This unforgettable classic remains one of the most popular of “must-do” holiday traditions in Nashvil......le. With the Nashville Symphony, Tennessee Centennial setting, dazzling costumes, glittering sets, and brand-new choreography, audiences last year said it best… “Awe-inspiring no matter how old you are”… “It might just be the best present to give to your family this holiday season”… “What a fresh performance, so many ahhhhhh moments!”....“Exquisite from start to finish.”

Nashville Ballet traditionally includes area dance students to be a part of Nutcracker magic and this year is no exception. Over 200 youth cast members will be dancing in this season’s production. The coveted roles of Clara and Fritz will be danced by two casts who will alternate performances. The role of Clara will be danced by Elizabeth Graves and Anna Celeste Harrer, with Fritz being danced by Azro-Solar Akimoto and Brady Davis. “Being included in a professional production is such an honor and a privilege for these students. It gives them the experience of interacting with a professional company and experiencing the full spectrum of performing in front of thousands of people” states Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Several youth cast members are coming from over 50 miles each way to for the opportunity to participate in this annual production: Julia Ridderhoof from Clarksville, TN, Russell Fernandez from Ft. Campbell, KY, Kasey and Gabi Broekema and Isabell Atella from Bowling Green, KY, Sarah Murray from Hartsville, TN and Callie Holloway from Sewanee, TN. Executive Director Andrea Dillenburg says, “It is so heartening to see the commitment that these parents, in fact, all of our parents, make in providing the opportunity for their child to dance with the best and achieve excellence. We’re honored.”

Nashville Ballet As a special bonus to this impressive season, Nashville Ballet will present Emergence: The Studio Series, at the Nashville Ballet Martin Center for Dance November 13 – 14 at 7:30 pm. A fresh take on Nashville Ballet’s previously successful Emergence performances, the innovative new Emergence: The Studio Series allows a......udience members to select a “dance list” of performances to watch, much like one puts together a play list of songs on their MP3 players. By assembling their own evening of ballet, guests have the opportunity to choose from three separate studios throughout the initial 90 minutes of the evening’s events, with each individual performance lasting approximately ten minutes, featuring pieces choreographed by company members Kelsey Bartman, Robert Poe, Christopher Stuart, and Andrea Vierra. After making the “rounds” of these more intimate performances, all audience members will come together to watch the grand finale, a collection of ballets from renowned choreographers Salvatore Aiello, James Canfield, Nashville Ballet’s Artistic Director Paul Vasterling, and NYCB Choreographic Fellowship recipient Kimberly Ratcliffe.

Throughout this evening of dance, Nashville Ballet will celebrate all forms of artistic expression. Two of Nashville Ballet’s performances, Table for Four and Be There, will feature live music by local musicians Benita Hill and Cody Sluder, respectively. Vasterling’s preview of Macbeth, will showcase new music from Michael Kurek and include musicians from the Blair School of Music. Original artwork by Nashville artists Jason Facio, David Knudston, Shana Kohnstamm, Mandy Lawson, and Heather Thorne, will dress the walls of the Nashville Ballet Martin Center for Dance, further emphasizing the bonds between music, dance, and visual art and the value of creative expression.

Tickets for Emergence: The Studio Series can be purchased online at www.nashvilleballet.com. As performances will take place in a more intimate setting, tickets are limited. Act quickly as this popular series will sell out quickly. Nashville Ballet’s Martin Center for Dance is located at 3630 Redmon St. in Nashville, TN

Nashville Ballet A luncheon for Ballet Ball 2010 table hosts will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 11:30- 1:00 p.m. Almost forty Table Hosts are expected to attend the luncheon, hosted by Jennifer Frist and Leah Sohr, at the lovely home of Leah and Jim Sohr. Guests include longtime Nashville Ballet enthusiasts, former Ba......llet Ball chairs, Ballet Board members, and corporate supporters. Ballet Ball Co-Chairs Jennifer Puryear and Betsy Wills will also attend, along with Paul Vasterling, artistic director of Nashville Ballet, and Andrea Dillenburg, executive director of Nashville Ballet.

Ballet Ball 2010 will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the brand new Hutton Hotel on West End Avenue. Ballet Ball 2010 features an Art Deco style designed in period colors of seafoam, daffodil, and steel grey. The look and feel of the Ball is inspired by the George Balanchine Ballet, Who Cares?, a tribute to the golden age of Broadway and a celebration of the unforgettable music of George Gershwin, featuring such hits as “I Got Rhythm,” “Strike Up the Band,” and ”Embraceable You.” Nashville Ballet will perform this work in its Winter Series, American Originals, on February 12 -14, 2010 in TPAC’s Polk Theater.

A Patrons’ party reception and an exclusive dinner to be held on March 5, 2010, will honor this year’s Paul Vasterling Award Recipient, Jacques d’Amboise. Ballet Ball Chairs Jennifer Puryear and Betsy Wills are particularly excited about this year’s Award Recipient, Jacques d’Amboise, one of the most outstanding and well-known classical dancers of our era. At age fifteen, Mr. d’Amboise joined New York City Ballet, and as a principal dancer, had many works choreographed specifically for him by George Balanchine, including Who Cares? Mr. d’Amboise went on to have an exceptional career with NYCB, on Broadway, and in such well known films as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Carousel. He has achieved international renown as a choreographer and as the founder of the National Dance Institute. He has been honored by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, received six Emmy awards, has received the National Medal of Arts and a MacArthur fellowship, and numerous honorary degrees.

Ballet Ball raises money for Nashville Ballet's Season programming, education and community engagement opportunities. In particular, funds from this event support the Ballet's mission to engage the community by integrating education and arts enrichment. Connecting learning and the creative arts, the Ballet broadens and enhances the quality of life for children, families, and seniors at schools, libraries, and community centers in a 15-county area. Dance Me A Story, Nashville Ballet's Children's Ballets are based on folk tales, set to original music and choreography, and include interactive dance.

For more information on attending Ballet Ball 2010, please contact Julie Eskind at 297-2966, ext. 30.

Nashville Ballet Nashville Ballet will present Giselle October 23-25, 2009. The romantic yet tragic story of Giselle has been one of the most popular ballets for over 150 years. After a seven year absence from the Nashville stage, the newly re-staged production will reacquaint Nashville with this romantic classic. This production is ac......companied by the Nashville Symphony under the direction of Nashville Ballet Music Director Paul Gambill. Artistic Director Paul Vasterling says, “This production has been reworked by Ballet Masters Tim Yeager and Sharyn Wood to develop the story more effectively and showcase the strength of the company.” The role of Giselle demands much of the ballerina both technically and artistically, and will alternate between dancers Christine Rennie and Sadie Harris.

Giselle, a poor country maiden, falls madly in love with a young man, Duke Albrecht, masquerading as a common peasant named Loys. After pledging her love to Loys, Giselle learns of his deception, takes her life and is transformed into a Wili (a female spirit who, jilted before her wedding day, rises from the grave at night and seeks revenge upon men by dancing them to death). When all the Wilis try to dance Duke Albrecht to death, Giselle defends him, saving his life and earning eternal peace. This ballet is the ultimate story of love and forgiveness.
